Learning objectives

After completing the course the student is able to
- plan his/her studies and use the information, counselling and guidance services available in Savonia UAS
- find support when needed in order to progress with the studies according to schedules
- evaluate and develop his/ her studying skills
- use the necessary IT tools and applications in his/her studies
- communicate, work and study in a multicultural environment

Teaching methods

The course includes 3 parts:
- Orientation to UAS studies (1 credit) which includes basic information about studying at Savonia. The working methods include interactive lectures and your PSP discussion with your teacher tutor.
- IT applications and skills in engineering studies (2 credits)
- Communication and grouping in a multicultural community (aka Multicultural communication) is based on active classroom work and passing 6 assignments and a set of online tasks during the course. Many assignments are done in groups or pairs. (2 credits)

All parts of the course require active participation in lessons and working according to schedules.

Each of the 3 parts will be graded pass/fail and you need to pass all of them to get 5 credits for the course.

Student workload

5 ECTS equals to approx. 135 hours of student's work. About half of it will take place as contact lessons in this course. The rest is independent study and finishing given tasks at home.

The course is divided into three parts:
- Orientation to UAS/engineering studies
- IT applications and skills in engineering studies
- Communication and grouping in a multicultural community

The course concentrates on giving general and Savonia specific tools for managing the student's own studies.

Successful completion of the course requires:
Active participation in starting days and contact classes, information sessions and events (SavoniaStart). Personal study plan discussion. Face-to-face classes and online work with exercises, assignments and independent work according to the given instructions and schedules.
