This is the first Finnish course. You will learn to use basic grammar, and will practise listening, reading, and speaking.
Topics:
Introducing, the alphabet, days of the week, numbers, countries and nationalities, weather, seasons of the year, family, daily routine, living arrangements, travelling.
Grammar:
Personal pronouns, the "olla" verb, consonant gradation, verb types, interrogatives, the genitive case, the -t plural form, the partitive case, I have, locative cases.

The aim is to help the foreign student to work in Finland and to tell about her work and duties. The students will learn to discuss and communicate with people at work. They will increase the awareness of Finnish culture and celebration. The students will reach the language level A2.2 at professional context and will be able to survive better at work in Finnish.
After the course the student is able to:
- tell about his/her working environment and duties in Finnish
- discuss in person and to communicate via email/other channels with people at work or studies: to ask, to advise and suggest things
- know the suitable communication style in different situations in Finnish culture
- understand and produce simple texts
- use ordinary professional vocabulary
- reach the language level A2.2 in the professional context in writing, reading, listening and speaking.

Student get skills in project work, time scheduling, teamworking, innovations and reporting. They will get skills of different IoT technologies and practices during the project. They learn especially professional skills of the embedded, sensor and wireless technologies. Students can use RD tools in product development tasks.

The communication part - evaluation: Pass/Fail
The evaluation is based on
- online tasks/ Quizzes - individual work, all must be done, passing limit of each quiz 70%
- 6 short assignments, done mostly during the lessons and as a group activity. All assignments must be passed. This requires active participation in classroom work in Autumn 2024.

The communication part of the course 2 cr, a work load of 54 h, consists of
- 12 h of interactive lessons
- 15 hrs of individual work with quizzes and reading materials
- 27 h communication and teamworking practice during your RD/IoT1 project work.

The implementation of the Real Time Systems course focuses on active student participation and practical exercises. Students explore a specific Free RTOS feature beforehand and complete related exercises during class. The course offers hands-on learning, collaborative discussions, and practical exercises to deepen students' understanding of real-time operating systems. The implementation of the course includes a project work component where students undertake a small-scale Free RTOS project as part of their coursework.

There are 3 meetings (6 lessons) available to support the start of the student's own thesis process. The sessions are:
1. Kick off/ orientation to thesis process.
2. Academic writing practices - a revision
3. Information retrieval and databases for thesis writers.
To earn the credits, the student partipates the lessons actively, acquiring the information concerning the key things related to the thesis process. The student chooses a topic that is relevant for the development of both the field of study and his/her own expertise, motivates his/her topic choice from various viewpoints, creates a thesis topic description and completes it into a thesis plan (=work plan). The student works flexibly with other people and parties involved in the thesis process and presents his /her knowledge and skills during the 1st phase of the thesis.

The course includes 3 parts:
- Orientation to UAS studies (1 credit) which includes basic information about studying at Savonia. The working methods include interactive lectures and your PSP discussion with your teacher tutor.
- IT applications and skills in engineering studies (2 credits)
- Communication and grouping in a multicultural community (aka Multicultural communication) is based on active classroom work and passing 6 assignments and a set of online tasks during the course. Many assignments are done in groups or pairs. (2 credits)
All parts of the course require active participation in lessons and working according to schedules.
Each of the 3 parts will be graded pass/fail and you need to pass all of them to get 5 credits for the course.

We will speak about environment, culture, society and learn to write e-mails in Finnish.
During grammar sessions, we will mainly focus on conditional, passive voice, verbs and imperative.
