Learning objectives

Student is able to:
- implement the legislations, national and ethical guidelines in health care service system in Finland
- promote patient safety in their nursing
- explain and implement infection prevention and control guidelines and practices in clinical nursing contexts
- plan, implement and assess nursing care for patients in different nursing contexts
- utilize clinical examination methods and tools in the assessment of a patient’s condition and apply them in nursing
- explain the pharmacodynamics of most common medications and fluids used in clinical nursing and implement safe medication administration
- apply non-pharmacological interventions in nursing
- plan, implement and assess the resource-oriented mentoring and psychosocial support to the patient and their next of kin
- improve communication and dialogical interaction skills in their professional competence
- analyse and apply evidence-based practice in nursing
- work in multi-professional co-operation in the clinical contexts
- perform drug calculations accurately

Content

- patient's care and care process in surgical wards
- treatment of surgical and chronic wounds
- acute care situations for paediatric patients and their families
- special considerations in Paediatric drug and fluid therapy in acute care situations
- nursing and pharmaceutical care for patients and their families with cardiac, renal, diabetes and cancer
- the mechanisms and treatment of the most common symptoms in palliative care (pain, breath, GI-channel symptoms, ascites, psychiatric symptoms, fatigue, cachexia, skin symptoms)
- methods for supporting palliative care patients and their loved ones (psychosocial, informative, emotional, psychological, mental and spiritual, existential and practical support)
- emergency patient initial assessment and triage (The ABCDE approach, NEWS, ISBAR): Airway and Breathing (airway assessment and management, assessment and care of breathing), Circulation (assessment and interventions of circulation e.g., ECG), Disability (assessment and care of neurological function)
- the care of the most common emergency patients: Respiratory distress, circulatory disorder and chest pain, deteriorated patients, poisoning and intoxication, abdominal pain, shock and sepsis

- Basic studies ad Obligatory professional studies completed. Except, the Development of interprofessional nursing care –Internship and National Exam (180 cr) can be unfinished.
- Optional professional theoretical studies must be in progress.
