Learning objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the key developmental stages and trends in the tourism and accommodation industry.
- Utilize essential basic concepts and depict the entirety of the tourism sector and industry.
- Explain the impacts of tourism.
- Analyze and utilize key statistics and reports.
- Describe the central industry quality standards and certifications.

Further information

Additionally, you have the opportunity to complete the Tourism Industry Safety Passport (MATUPA) at your own expense. Completing the safety passport is part of elective studies (1 ECTS).

Teaching methods

The course combines contact lessons, visiting experts from industry and company visits. The primary teaching language is English. Essential vocabulary and phrases relevant to the tourism and accommodation sector are also going to be learned in Finnish.

The course consists of introductory lectures, group work, simulations and written assignments.

Assessment Methods: Individual assignment and participation to simulations.

Student workload

The course is worth 5 credit units, which means a student works approximately 135 hours on the course. The 135 hours consist of:
- lectures
- visiting lecturers from industry and company visits
- simulations
- independent studying and assignment.
