Learning objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Communicate in simple situations about routine everyday matters.
- Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to daily contexts in Finnish.
- Describe in simple terms their life and background.
- Write short informal messages related to their daily life.
- Name and understand some tourism and hospitality related words and simple customer service phrases.

Content

- Vocabulary and themes e.g.: Finnish culture, customs, food, travelling, professions, body parts, illnesses, nature and free time.
- Finnish structures in the level A1-A2, e.g.: past and present tenses, object, common word types.
- Getting to know language learning strategies.

Teaching methods

This is the second Finnish course, and the aim is to become familiar with everyday life situations in Finnish environment. Target language proficiency level after the course is A2.1. During the course you will learn more vocabulary, phrases and structures needed in everyday situations. You will also learn more about Finnish culture, customs and nature. You will also learn some words and simple phrases related to the tourism and hospitality industry.

Learning methods include lectures and activating exercises in class together with independent studying according to the instructions. The assessment (on a grading scale 0-5) is based on the exams and the assignments.

Student workload

The student’s workload for each learning method:
- Lectures and exercises in class 50 h
- Final exam 4 h preparing for the exam 8h
- Independent studying and doing assignments and exercises 73 h
