Learning objectives

After completing the course, students will have the ability to

- understand the role of dental hygienists in a school and child health clinic
- share their dental hygienist's competences in multidisciplinary cooperation
- understand the responsibility assigned to oral healthcare workers in the Child Welfare Act
- understand the factors that influence the development of children’s and young people’s eating habits
- understand the significance of different children's diseases and medicines in relation to oral health
- understand the growth and development of the masticatory organ
- describe the stages of development and eruption of primary teeth, mixed dentition
and permanent teeth
- describe the periodontological diseases affecting children and young people
- describe the specific features of child caries treatment
- describe the most common dental and jaw injuries in children and young people
- perform an oral health examination on children of different ages
- adjust communication methods to suit children and young people
- evaluate a child's or young person's health behaviour, especially in relation to oral self-care,
dietary habits, and the use of tobacco products, alcohol and drugs
- provide guidance to children, young people and their families regarding oral self-care
