Teaching methods

On this course, you will learn basic Finnish language.

During the course, you will practice pronunciation and learn the alphabet, numbers, greetings, days of the week, months, and seasons.

You will learn to talk about yourself, your family, your typical day, your apartment, as well as the weather, food, and work.

You will learn to ask questions and use common verbs, adjectives, gradation, plural, genitive, partitive, locative cases, and pronouns.

Evaluation is based on the final exam points:
50% = grade 1
60% = grade 2
70% = grade 3
80% = grade 4
90% = grade 5.

Alternative implementation methods

RPL based on the certificate: YKI test or other proof of A1.3 level language proficiency

Student workload

The study requires 135 hours:
- lectures on campus or in Zoom 50 h
- independent study: preparation for lectures and mandatory exercises in Moodle 73 h

During the course you will learn intermediate level grammar and vocabulary.

Encountering the client and guiding, mentoring and caring for him or her. Telling about the working environment and duties, other important interactions in a multicultural environment, studying the field-specific material in English and/or Finnish (foreign students),essential professional vocabulary. The concepts of culture and intercultural communication, cultural sensitivity, improving intercultural communication skills.

Evaluation is based on the final exam points:
50% = grade 1

90% = grade 5.

Alternative implementation methods

Participation in contact lessons, workshops, discussions and practice-based exercises. Accepted completion of oral and written assignments, passed exams. Including online studies. Contact lessons obligatory for foreign students. Simulations and skill labs are obligatory for everyone.

For Finnish students full RPL in English language according to passed exam result or complementary online studies. For Finnish students Easy language (EL, selkokieli) studies as independent online studies, knowledge shown in obligatory simulations.

For foreign students RPL of Finnish theory is possible if the course Finnish for nurses B2 is completed.

Before the clinical internship begins:
Nursing Assessment and Interventions, both theory and internship, Nursing Assessment and Interventions, Clinical Skills, Basics of Pharmacological Treatment, Medical Nursing theory. Either Internship: Medical Nursing OR Internship: Perioperative Nursing must be completed. Theory studies of Perioperative Nursing must be ongoing according to student´s own group curriculum. Theory course of Paediatric and Family Nursing must be passed apart from the drug calculations. However, student must have participated Paediatric Nursing drug calculation test.
