Teaching methods

The course is divided into weekly ear-training session and a weekly theory session. The objective is is to give the student necessary knowledge and tools to conduct a band or orchestra an da ct as a pedagogue in a musical learning situation.
Basic arranging techniques are introduced along with essential musical terminology.
The topics are outlined in my "Hygiene Passport", a semi-humorous concept introducing key knowledge areas necessary for a successful pedagogical activity in the field of music.

Materials

As a reference material a publication called Turnaround (unfortunately in Finnish) is used.
The course is passed when the student attends classes regularly and completes given homework assignments.

Teaching methods

The student familiarizes oneself with the fundamentals of music theory and analysis, history, and basic music notation, and gains readiness for further studies.

The student has a comprehensive understanding of the history of western music, its important periods, stylistic nuances, structures, core repertoire, ways of thinking, and practices. The student is able to explain these phenomena while teaching, and creatively produce them through playing and singing, and possibly utilizing technological applications to produce teaching and group playing material (sheet music) for different music education and music-making situations. The student is capable of applying the acquired skills in practice as well as in new situations. The student has good readiness for acquiring new knowledge and for lifelong self-improvement. In the studies, emphasis is placed on self-reliance as well as on a developmental and research-oriented approach.

Teaching methods

The student acquires an understanding of the essential elements of the African-American musical tradition, historic development of the musical styles, musical forms, musical works and general practises within the context.
The student will be able to utilize his/her knowledge in demonstrating these topics in a pedgogical context, utilizing his/her skill singing and instrumental skills. Tgeb student is able to produce learning material using modern technology.
The student acquires an ability to independent research and life-long self-improvement.
Scientific curiosity is highly emphasized in the course.

Weekly one session is dedicated to theory and the other one in ear-training (solfege).
