Learning objectives

After completing the course, students will have the ability to

- describe factors related to oral health
- describe the importance of nutrition in terms of oral health
- apply Finnish nutritional recommendations in dietary instructions provided to patients
- take into account various specific nutritional issues affecting oral health
- describe the effects of fluoride on oral health
- describe the effects of xylitol on oral health
- describe how saliva tests are taken and analysed
- provide advice on how to prevent erosion
- describe the effects of piercings around the mouth area on oral health
- describe the effects of tobacco products, alcohol and drugs on general and oral health
- instruct clients on oral self-care instruments, products and methods
